Many have seen the information and emails about the Trigger Wheel http://www.triggerwheel.com/ and many have had varied opinions on it usefulness and performance. I found it interesting, when I first heard about the device, how it would increase torque and MPG for my 1998 Goldwing SE. I read the info on their WEB page, asked a couple of Honda Mechanics if or how it would effect the Warranty and then decided to purchase and install one.
Warranty Note: According to "my" dealer/service manager, the Trigger Wheel in of itself will not void your Warranty. If a failure occures that is linked to the Trigger Wheel then it will effect the warranty. But to simply install one should not effect your warranty and. in-fact, many Honda dealers will install the wheel for you.
I ordered and received the 6 degree Trigger Wheel and one Saturday I decided to install it. I had never tore into a 1500 Goldwing to this extent and I remembered the job it was to change the belts on my 1984 Aspencade so I was a little worried about getting this correct. By the way, I really envy the Valkyrie owners. They could literally install a Trigger Wheel on their bikes while sitting on the side of the road.
Installing the wheel ended up being a very straightforward and simple job. The hardest part I had was removing the left side belt cover because my hoses seemed to be a little tight and I had a time getting cover out. The entire job from start to finish took me all of 45 minutes with 1 coffee break. Right from the start my bike ran better. It felt like it had better torque and my bike had a hesitation problem that went away with the install of the trigger wheel.
Recently there was an article published in Wing World that I felt did a serious injustice to the Trigger Wheel. I will not go into details about it but it did make me think about MPG and Octane level I was running. In my older 84 Wing I always ran 92 Octane. When I bought my 98SE everyone I talked with said to use the cheap stuff and so long as the bike does not ping you're good to go. The Trigger Wheel install docs recommend a 92 Octane but people I spoke with said I could use as low as possible so long as the bike didn't ping. I decided to use 89 Octane until the read the article in Wing World and then I started looking close as the MPG I was getting and decided to change to 92 octane and see where it got me. This WEB page gives those results. Now a couple of disclaimers:
1. I did not start keeping track of my MPG on my 98 until I found a program for my Palm Pilot.
2. There were a couple of times I failed to enter into my pilot the exacts while at the pump and had to try and remember what the miles were based on the receipt.
3. There was 1 occurrence where I did not fill up my tank because I forgot my wallet and only had $5.00 cash in my pocket and an empty tank.
4. Most important. Your results may differ from mine and your opinion may differ from me and that's OK. This is simply to display what MY results were based on MY mileage. Your results may vary.
5. I drive my bike hard. I go fast, accelerate hard, brake hard, slam it into corners and I wind it out before shifting. Sometimes I ride 2 up but most of the time just 1. Sometimes I pull a trailer but normally I don't. My numbers are based on normal day to day life driving.
6. The data below is unaltered. It was taken direct from my Palm Pilot with the only exception being to times for some early entries. The program I use did not take into account multiple fuel stops in a single day so it did not timestamp each entry. The author of the software fixed that so on some early entries you will see some weird time of day times for fillups for some trips I did.
As for the Data. You will see that my stock Goldwing, without a trigger wheel, using Regular unleaded fuel, that my highest MPG reading was 48.23, and the lowest was 15.29. I will also admit that those highest and lowest readings were at a time frame that I did not do a fillup (see item 3 above) so I believe my actual highest was 44.71 and my lowest was 22.19 and my average was 29.88 mpg
The performance of the bike was flawless with the exception of a Hesitation at highway speeds when I would roll on the throttle.

I purchased my bike on June 1, 1999 so it was 2 months shy of 1 year before I installed the Trigger wheel. I also replaced the spark plugs with normal OEM NGK plugs and synced the Carburetors and in that same month I replaced my OEM air filter with a K&N filter.

As can be seen by the data. My Highest MPG was 44.26 and my lowest was 25.08 while my overall average was 30.84. It doesn't sound like much of a difference but if you scan through my fillups you will see that most of my MPG readings stayed in the low to mid 30's while the table above shows that most of them were in the mid to high 20's.

After reading the article in published in Wing World about the Trigger Wheel. It got me thinking about the ping that the author had mentioned her heard while the bike was on the Dyno. I decided I would change to the Trigger Wheel Manufacturer recommendations and start running my bike with 92 octane fuel. The data below shows my highest MPG at 60.83 and my lowest at 28.09 and my average went to 33.38. Now if you look at it based on the before trigger wheel of 29.88 and my current of 33.38 that gives me and average gain of 3.5 miles more per gallon that equals some 21 miles more per tank. That in of itself gives me results that were worth the $56.00 cost for the trigger wheel.

A word about Spark Plugs:
When I changed my plugs the first time I saved my old ones and I wrote down on each box the exact gap setting of the new one and what cylinder it was replacing. I removed those plugs on January 21, 2001. I compared those to the original plugs Each plug was perfect. The gap was still the exact same, there was nothing unusual about the plugs and they looked the same as the original ones I pulled out at 18K. So, in short, I put18K on the original bikes OEM plugs with no trigger wheel and I always ran the cheap 87 octane gas. With the trigger wheel, on 89 and 92 Octane there is no evidence of any trouble on the spark plugs, no excessive burn, no fuel, no pitting and no incorrect mixture.
I have to say that overall my feelings about the Trigger Wheel install are that I am very satisfied and I got what I originally wanted and that was increased range per tank of fuel. I would recommend the addition to anyone who has a Goldwing or Valkery. It is a simple job to install, is inexpensive and results are worth it.
